We have a great free tool called Capacity Modeler that lets you run "what if" scenarios for environment changes after importing your existing VMware environment. You can find it at http://www.vkernel.com/products/capac....
We would like to begin building on this and I'd love to have feedback on how you're using it, what great, what's missing, and how it could better fit your needs.
Do you use Capacity Modeler? Can you help us build on it?
-
If we already have the VKernel Capacity Management Suite, does the Capacity Modeler offer anything new?
-
-
There is a little bit of overlap between the two, but Modeler allows you to make changes to your environment in virtual sandbox. You can plan entire projects (i.e. adding new hosts, removing old hosts, changing VM and cluster configurations, etc.) and validate the changes before doing them to your actual environment.
-
-
In other words, Modeler is more of a "what-if" tool. I'd be interested to know how people do or would use these capabilities.
-
-
Let me rephrase this question. When you are doing capacity planning, what sort of what-if questions do you wish you could easily ask and answer?
-
-
Why would these Capacity Modeler capabilites not be part fo the Capacity maanger product????/
-
-
Actually, that's the main point of the question. Modeler is a separate free tool and can't simply be put into the main product, but we are building out the same modeling capabilities over time within Capacity Manager. I would like to understand the key use cases in order to do this in the simplest, most usable way possible.

Like most modeling applications, the key is based on assumptions and the quality of the underlying data. I am not completely clear that simple factors like RAM/CPU and disk size lead towards a relevant modeling endeavour. Factors like underlying bare metal and features like DRS/HA make some elements of difference in your model as well as policy and affinity.
Generally, I am in great favor of leveraging what-if situations. I have not used this utility but suspect with the right inputs it may be useful. -

I will help you if you can make it work for me
I have set it up but it's been saying 'connectin' to vcenter for the past 2 weeks
If you can help me get it working then I'll give you feedback :) -
-
Would be handy if it worked.
I installed it to perform a what-if scenario for adding a number of specific virtual servers.
The tool cannot make a connection to Vcenter or any ESX host. I am using Vsphere 5 but the same problem exist on Vsphere 4.1. -

Eddy and 0videotest0, sorry for the delay.
Could you get logs and send them into support@vkernel.com? You can get them by executing this in the console:
tar -cjf logs.tar.bz2 /usr/local/vkernel/log/*
You don’t need to be root - you can just run this from the home directory right after logging in and use WinSCP to copy it off onto your desktop. -
-
I get the following error when i type the tar command for the logfiles.
tar: cowardly refusing to create an empty archive. -

Hi Eric
I have run the command and have sent the logs to support, what kind time would i be looking at for reply
Thanks

0videotest0: Looks like there were a series of issues. First was the need to set the logging level to 2 in vCenter ... looks like you took care of that. We also saw a couple user/password failures, but the final problem was a resolution error. It wasn't able to translate the FQDN to an IP address. If it wasn't just a typo in the name, you might just try putting the IP address in directly as a quick workaround.
Eddy: that sounds like it might be a permissions problem? -

Hello Eric,
I managed to get the logfiles. I typed the tar command wrong thats why it did not work in the first place. I have sent 2 logfiles to support. 1 logfile when connecting is not working using IP address of Virtual Center server. 1 logfile when connecting is not working using FQDN of Virtual center server..
I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Eric,
The vkutils_error.log tells me a "ConnectException: Connection refused" occured. Which signals that an error occurred while attempting to connect a socket to a remote address and port.
Typically, the connection was refused remotely (e.g., no process is listening on the remote address/port).
Maybe this information helps you resolving the issue.
@ 0videotest0:
Could you successfully connect using IP address insdteda of hostname?
Regards,

Having the same issue as the others. Will try to get the logs and send them to support. Any news on the issue lately?

Apologies for the delay ...
Modeler does not support vSphere 5.0 - is that the version you are running on?
We are in the process of integrating the key capabilities of Modeler into the main product, and that will be our route to supporting vSphere 5+. -
